Muffy Brant

When Muffy first started her project she had just had hip replacement surgery OUCH! and was laid up recovering. She could not go on the computer or draw for very long so she used colorful modeling clay to make a ton of psychedelic dots and a black and white wavy checkered design.Over the course of her project Muffy went from pretty immobile and a little loopy to becoming strong enough to build a set for her photoshoot. This project was unique because it evolved and progressed in a different way as she got stronger. Mufffy was inspired by the stop motion animations of Leif Goldberg and Ara Peterson. They used colorful blobs of modeling clay and sliced them between shots, making an analog screen saver and an abstract field of colors. For her tumbling dice pattern she was inspired by the Quilts of Gees Bend, and for her happy bats print she was inspired by antique engravings of bats and bootleg cartoon characters. At the moment Muffy is working on a new collection of digital designs and is busy experimenting with resist indigo dyeing and quilting in her studio.
